Exploring "The Animator's Survival Kit" with Richard Williams
Sponsored by LAIKA
Thursday,October 30, 2008
Portland Community College, Cascade Campus
Registration 6:00 pm
Presentation 6:30pm to 8:00pm
About the Speaker
Richard Williams is a three-time Academy Award winner.
He has received Oscars for Special Achievement and Visual Effects as the
director of animation on “Who Framed Roger Rabbit” (1988), and for his
short film “A Christmas Carol” (1971).
Born in Toronto, Richard Williams became one of the finest animation filmmakers
of the late twentieth century and has been a mentor to countless others.
Williams began his animation work in the states at United Productions of America in the 1950s,
and became friends with Chuck Jones.
He emigrated to Spain and then to England in 1955. In 1958 Williams won The British Academy of Film and Television Arts, (BAFTA)
award for his work on “The Little Island.” Williams went on to direct
the Academy Award-winning “A Christmas Carol” (1971). During the 1970s, his London-based
studio created scores of stunningly crafted, award-winning commercials, titles, short films,
and television specials. Not content with these successes, Williams then went on to hire
veteran animators from the Disney studio's "Golden Age" and from Warner Bros. Cartoons,
most notably Grim Natwick (Snow White), Art Babbitt (Fantasia), and Ken Harris (Bugs Bunny).
He also learned from his friends Milt Kahl (Pinocchio, The Jungle Book), and
Frank Thomas (Bambi, Cinderella).
A distillation of his acquired knowledge went into the animation he directed for “Who Framed Roger Rabbit’ and, most recently, into an unparalleled and indispensable series of instructional DVD Master Classes based on his bestselling book “The Animator's Survival Kit,“ published in 2000 by
Farber & Farber. There are over 350 specially animated examples intercut with his 4-day
Master Class filmed at Blue Sky Studios in New York.

Design Thinking: Action and Ecosystem
Bill Buxton, Microsoft
Co-Sponsored with CHIFOO
Wednesday,
June 11, 2008
Book signing at Powell's Technical Bookstore 5 - 6pm
Lecture at The Portland World Trade Center 7 - 8pm
Doors at the World Trade Center open at 6:30pm
Lecture starts promptly at 7pm
The number of books, articles, and conferences on innovation, creativity,
and design is staggering. Yet, there is still precious little on what
designers actually do, how they do it, and how they interact with the
other disciplines involved in bringing concepts to fruition. This talk
is based in the premise that design is a distinct discipline with specific
skills and practices. Furthermore, the physical and cultural ecosystem in
which designers work has a huge impact on their ability to exercise these
skills. This talk aims to shine some light on design skills and their
relationship to various aspects of this ecosystem. The purpose is not to
make everyone a designer; rather, it is to help both designers and
non-designers better understand how and where they fit into the larger
mosaic that makes up the partnership required to go effectively from
concept to practice.
Bill Buxton is a designer and a researcher concerned with human aspects
of technology. His work reflects a particular interest in the use of
technology to support creative activities such as design, film making,
and music. Bill's research specialties include technologies, techniques
and theories of input to computers, technology mediated human-human
collaboration, and ubiquitous computing. In December 2005, he was
appointed Principal Researcher at Microsoft Research. Prior to that,
he was Principal of his own Toronto-based boutique design and consulting
firm, Buxton Design, where his time was split between working for
clients, lecturing, and trying to finish a long-delayed book on sketching
and interaction design. He is also an Associate Professor in the Department
of Computer Science at the University of Toronto, where he still works
with graduate students.

An Evening with Dr. Stuart Sumida
From Stones and Bones to Balloons and Toons:
Articulating the Anatomical Sciences with Animation
and Digital Effects
Tuesday,
March 25, 2008
Doors open at 6pm
Lecture starts at 6:30pm
Come and join us for an exciting and intellectually
stimulating lecture given by Dr. Stuart Sumida, professor of Biology at California
State University San Bernardino.
A frequent consultant for animated films and special
effects projects for studios such as Walt Disney Animation, DreamWorks, SONY Pictures
ImageWorks, Pixar, and others, he is a comparative anatomist and paleontologist
who specializes in the biomechanics and evolution of locomotion.
Using a wide variety of examples from the many films he has worked
with, Dr. Sumida will describe the potent tools available to artists
if they consider some basic rules of animal and human biology. In
a qualitative fashion, he will guide listeners/viewers through how
what an animal eats and/or its size can account for the vast majority
of the structural diversity important to animators and digital effects
artists in the animal world. He will then move from real animals,
and show how with relatively little new information, the same rules
can be applied to mythical and fantastic beasts.
Please see Dr. Sumida’s web site for further information:
http://www.stuartsumida.com/
Networking and social hour will begin at 6:00 p.m. in the lobby,
with the lecture starting at 6:30 p.m.
