GPU Shader Programming for Fun and Visualization
Thursday,
March 22, 2007
Join us for a lecture by award-winning Oregon State University professor in Computer Science, Dr. Mike Bailey,
on graphics processing unit (GPU) shader programming and visualization. Dr. Baileys lecture will discuss the
basics of vertex and fragment GPU shader programming, as well as the brand-new geometry shader capability,
and its specific use in scientific data visualization. This talk will also introduce glman, a free piece of software
that greatly simplifies learning shader programming.
The ability to program the GPU, that is, injecting ones own algorithms into the graphics pipeline, is one of the
most exciting things to ever happen in computer graphics, said Dr. Mike Bailey, Computer Science professor at
Oregon State University. This increased control with little sacrifice in speed, is a development that will impact
all areas in the graphics community, from game development to scientific visualization.
